Locksmith help in Rickmansworth and Croxley Green

Find a locksmith across WD3, from the old centre of Rickmansworth to the Metro-land roads of Croxley Green, with their 1920s and 1930s semis, bungalows and older mill cottages.

What are homes like around Rickmansworth and Croxley?

Both places grew quickly once the Metropolitan Railway reached them. In the 1920s and 1930s, as part of what was marketed as Metro-land, roads of semi-detached and detached houses and bungalows spread across fields around Rickmansworth and Croxley Green. Many of those homes still have the layout they were built with: a recessed front porch, a timber front door with a glazed panel, and a side passage to a back door.

Rickmansworth's older centre is earlier, with Georgian and Victorian buildings around the High Street and Church Street, and it is a conservation area. Croxley Green has its own history as a paper-making village. Dickinson Square was built at the end of the nineteenth century as housing for workers at the John Dickinson paper mill, and it too is now a conservation area.

What lock jobs come up in homes like these?

  • original timber front doors with only a night latch, where an owner wants a mortice deadlock added
  • replacement uPVC doors from the 1980s onwards, many fitted with euro cylinders that may predate snapping-resistant designs
  • back doors and side gates down long passages, which are easy to overlook when changing locks
  • French doors and older patio doors with worn locking mechanisms
  • flats in converted houses and newer blocks near the stations

Is there anything to check on an older or listed house?

If your home is listed, changing the front door itself or fitting new hardware to a historic door can need listed building consent from Three Rivers District Council, so ask before work that goes beyond a like-for-like lock. In a conservation area, swapping a timber door for a new one in a different style may need checking too; the Planning Portal's guide to doors and windows explains the general rules. Replacing a lock inside an existing door is not normally a planning matter.

Does it matter which council or police force?

Rickmansworth and Croxley Green are both in Three Rivers district, and they are policed by Hertfordshire Constabulary. If you are reporting a break-in, call 999 if it is happening now, or 101 or online if it is over.

What about homes near the canal and the lakes?

The Grand Union Canal runs along the south side of Rickmansworth, past Batchworth Lock and beside the Aquadrome, a local nature reserve made from old gravel pits. Flats and townhouses have gone up near the water and the town centre in recent decades, and many have a communal entrance with a fob or code panel as well as a front door to each home.

In a block like that, the communal door and its entry system are for the freeholder or managing agent to repair, so report a fault to them. Your own front door is usually yours to look after, but read the lease first, because a flat door in a block is often a fire door. Garages, bin stores and bike stores may be on separate keys, and those are easy to miss when the locks are changed.

What helps with an enquiry from WD3?

Say whether your door is the original timber one or a later replacement, what locks it has, and whether you own, rent or lease. A photo of the lock from both sides is useful.

Who you will hear from

We pass your enquiry to one local locksmith, if one covers your postcode. It is never sent to a list of companies. If nobody covers your postcode, we will tell you and will not pass your details on.
